Aims and objectives

  • To develop an enhanced system of data collection and feedback, including feedback at individual consultant level. This will allow consultants to benchmark their performance against other consultants and will provide information that can be used in the appraisal process for surgical consultants.
  • To widen the scope of SASM to cover more surgical specialties and unexpected deaths up to 30 days from admission under the care of a surgical consultant.
  • To develop a more robust system of assessor training and accreditation, reflecting the enhanced uses to which the data will be put.
  • To evaluate the usefulness of SASM data for consultant appraisal.
