The assumption is that the main clinical questions can be answered from the literature. The methodology will therefore be selection of appropriate studies from a literature review using pre-defined inclusion and exclusion criteria, extraction of relevant data and statistical pooling of results to obtain overall clinical outcome measures. Data will be presented using evidence tables.
The initial search strategy will be to restrict the review to studies undertaken since 1999.
A literature search will also be undertaken to answer the cost-effectiveness questions. The search will encompass all forms of economic evaluations (cost-benefit, cost-utility, cost-effectiveness and cost-consequence analysis). However, if the results from this search do not generalise to the Scottish setting then economic modelling is likely to be necessary. This may seek to adapt an existing model.
The current protocols used to determine who should receive blood transfusions will be requested to assist in defining standard care.
Experts will be asked to advise on the appropriate assumptions to make on identifying potential patients suitable for this therapy and on administering epoetinum alfa.
A literature search will also be undertaken to inform the patient issues component of the HTA. Jehovah s Witnesses and relevant patient support groups will be contacted to solicit views.
